Largest IDNs in South Dakota

South Dakota is the 5th smallest state in the U.S. by population. Its 919,000 residents rely on 69 hospitals and healthcare facilities in SD. Many of these hospitals are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN).

Also known as a health system, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities. Hospitals are often a central and significant part of an IDN, as they tend to be the largest and most financially impactful component within the network. Targeting IDNs with vast hospital networks can allow your product or service to reach more facilities and help more patients.

Yet another metric of an IDN’s success is its net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. The larger an IDN’s NPR, the greater its financial success and the more likely it is to expand its facilities and healthcare offerings.

With help from HospitalView and using data from the Medicare Cost Report, we created two lists: one of the largest IDNs in South Dakota based on the number of affiliated hospitals and another of the most financially successful IDNs in SD based on NPR.

What South Dakota IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in South Dakota with the highest net patient revenue is Sanford Health, with an NPR of $4.4 billion. With the greatest number of staffed beds and discharges, it's no surprise that Sanford Health also has the greatest NPR—it has the capacity to serve the most patients, leading to its higher revenues.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in South Dakota is Avera Health, with an NPR of $2.7 billion.

Monument Health IDN has the third-highest NPR in South Dakota, with an NPR of $945 million. It is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which is one of the highest-earning IDNs in the U.S., based on NPR.

While net patient revenue is a key indicator of the financial strength of these IDNs, other qualities can provide more insight into an IDN. For example, the two highest-earning IDNs in South Dakota are classified as system IV integration level, which are health systems that use strategy and organization in their internal structures to align information systems, purchasing, and distribution across all their facilities. Thus, they can benefit from a specific set of services and products that align with these goals.

Targeting IDNs in South Dakota

In today’s healthcare market, hospitals are no longer the primary focus of care providers and patients; instead, IDNs are becoming increasingly prevalent in care delivery, making them a valuable target. Furthermore, whether you're looking to sell a product or service, marketing to IDNs allows you to take advantage of their wide range of care facilities, especially if you market to IDNs with larger networks.

However, selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and especially when you're looking to target IDNs. Each IDN follows a unique model, so a standard marketing approach will not be as successful as tailoring your marketing to match the IDN. Understanding South Dakota’s broader health system landscape can help you as you make these strategic decisions.
