Largest IDNs in Oregon

Oregon is the 27th largest state in the U.S. by population. There are 70 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Oregon according to Definitive Healthcare data. Many of these healthcare facilities are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs (also referred to as health systems) are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, imaging centers, health clinics, or ambulatory surgery centers. Knowing how large an IDN is can help you identify which IDNs offer a greater potential for the distribution of your product or service across numerous locations.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we created a list of the largest and highest-earning IDNs in Oregon based on the number of affiliated hospitals and net patient revenue (NPR). The data used to make these lists comes from the Medicare Cost Report.

What Oregon IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Oregon with the highest net patient revenue is OHSU Partners, with an NPR of $2.83 billion.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Oregon is Providence Health & Services – Oregon and Southwest Washington, with an NPR of $2.8 billion. This health system offers a holistic approach to medicine that combines advanced treatments with compassion and humanity. In addition to Oregon and Washington, Providence spans Alaska, Montana, and California.

Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) has the third-highest NPR in Oregon, with an NPR of $2.5 billion. It is a part of the parent IDN OHSU Partners, the top-earning IDN in Oregon, and has Oregon’s only academic health center.

NPR is a common financial metric of IDNs and healthcare organizations, and it can be useful in gauging an IDN’s ability to expand or adopt new services/technologies. However, NPR is not the only metric providing insight into an IDN. For those looking to target their marketing and produce effective sales conversations, it is also helpful to know an IDN’s integration level, relationships, and referrals.

Targeting IDNs in Oregon

In today’s healthcare market, hospitals are no longer the primary focus of care providers and patients; instead, IDNs are assuming greater responsibility for all aspects of patient care, making them a valuable target. Whether you’re looking to sell a product or service, marketing to IDNs allows you to take advantage of their wide range of care facilities, especially if you market to IDNs with larger networks.

However, selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and even more so when you’re looking to target IDNs. Each IDN follows a unique model, so a copy-and-paste marketing approach will not be as successful as tailoring your marketing to match the IDN; understanding Oregon’s broader health system landscape can help you as you make these strategic decisions.
