Largest IDNs in North Dakota

North Dakota is the 4th smallest state in the U.S. when ranking based on population. Its 783,000 residents rely on just 56 hospitals and healthcare facilities in ND, with many being part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs are networks of healthcare facilities that may include hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, or physician clinics. The larger an IDN you target with your marketing, the greater the distribution you may see of your product or service, which allows your company to make a bigger splash in the healthcare industry. Additionally, the greater an IDN’s revenue, the more likely they are interested in expanding their facilities or services.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView and data from the Medicare Cost Report, we created two lists: one ranking North Dakota IDNs based on their number of affiliated hospitals and another listing them in order of their financial success.

What North Dakota IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in North Dakota with the highest net patient revenue is CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck, with an NPR of $473 million.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in New Mexico is Trinity Health, with an NPR of $465 million.

Finally, Sisters of Mary of Presentation Health System has the third-highest NPR in NM at $52 million. Despite having the same number of hospitals as Trinity Health, SMP Health has only a fraction of the staffed beds, suggesting that each hospital is considerably smaller. As a result, SMP Health has a smaller capacity for patients, contributing to their smaller NPR.

Of note, all these IDNs are classified as System III integration. Also known as vertical integration, this integration level is used to identify IDNs that provide cradle-to-grave healthcare services. The health systems each contain care facilities that span prenatal care to assisted living facilities, and the goal is to share information and resources across their facilities. With a greater range of care services, these IDNs can care for more individuals, which is vital considering North Dakota’s small population.

The value in targeting North Dakota IDNs

When you’re looking to sell into ND’s healthcare industry, having a strategy is essential to ensure that every effort you make sees profitable returns. With today’s consolidating healthcare market placing the responsibility of making decisions for healthcare facilities on IDNs, marketing that is targeted at IDNs is all the more important.

Whether it’s a product or service that you’re bringing to market, knowing which North Dakota IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you narrow down a target list based on network breadth, financial success, and location. In the world of targeted marketing, knowledge can save you time and money in the long run by helping you focus your efforts on the right IDNs.
