Largest IDNs in New Jersey

New Jersey is the 11th largest state in the U.S. by population. Its 9.2 million residents rely on 127 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

Also known as a health system, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, health clinics, physician groups, imaging centers, or ambulatory surgery centers. Thus, targeting large IDNs allows for your product or service to reach more facilities and have a greater impact on the healthcare industry.

One metric of an IDN’s success is its net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. A larger NPR indicates greater financial success and shows which IDNs have the means to expand their facilities and healthcare offerings.

What New Jersey IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

There are two New Jersey IDNs with the highest number of affiliated hospitals—both RWJ Barnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health have 18 hospitals within their networks.

RWJ Barnabas Health is partnered with Rutgers University, making it the largest academic healthcare system in New Jersey. It is dedicated to bringing leading-edge research and world-class medical and health education to its patients.

Hackensack Meridian Health has two hospitals that have made the top 10 list for New Jersey Hospitals, according to rankings by U.S. News & World Report. This includes the #1 NJ hospital for both adult and pediatric care, Hackensack University Medical Center. Its network also consists of a university teaching hospital, a behavioral health hospital, community hospitals, and rehabilitation hospitals.

Atlantic Health System has the third-highest number of hospitals, with eight affiliated hospitals.

New Jersey IDNs may not have as many hospitals in their networks as some of the top IDNs in the country, but there is still value in knowing which NJ IDNs have the most expansive networks—the more hospitals in their network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized, which can make larger IDNs a wise target for your marketing efforts.
