Largest IDNs in Montana

Montana is the 8th smallest state in the U.S. by population. Definitive Healthcare tracks 67 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Montana, which are often part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

Also known as a health system, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, imaging centers, physician groups, health clinics, or ambulatory surgery centers. Targeting large IDNs allows for your product or service to reach more facilities and have a greater impact on the healthcare industry.

Yet another metric of an IDN’s success is its net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. A larger NPR indicates greater financial success and shows which IDNs have the means to expand their facilities and healthcare offerings.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we created two lists: one ranking Montana IDNs by their number of affiliated hospitals and another ranking Montana IDNs based on their NPR.

What Montana IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Montana health system with the most hospitals is Billings Clinic-Logan Health, with 20 hospitals. This IDN is a recent collaboration of two IDNs, Billings Clinic and Logan Health, that officially started in September of 2023, making it a relatively new merger. This merging allows for the individual IDNs to share best practices with each other and allows for easier healthcare access for the citizens of Montana.

The next two largest IDNs in Montana are those that make up this parent IDN.

First up is Billings Clinic Heath System, with 14 hospitals. It provides services to those in Montana, Wyoming, and the western Dakotas. It is a not-for-profit organization that features a level I trauma center, a level III NICU, an inpatient cancer care unit, and a surgery center, alongside its hospitals.

Logan Health is the IDN with the third-highest number of hospitals with six affiliated hospitals.

Montana IDNs do not have as many hospitals in their network as some of the top IDNs in the country. However, there is still value in knowing which MT IDNs have the most expansive networks—the more hospitals in their network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized. Knowing this, larger IDNs can be a wise target for your marketing efforts.

What Montana IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Montana with the highest net patient revenue is Billings Clinic-Logan Health, with an NPR of $1.9 billion.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Montana is Billings Clinic Health System, with an NPR of $1.2 billion.

Finally, Logan Health has the third-highest NPR in Montana, with a net patient revenue of $735 million.

Interestingly, these same three IDNs make both top three lists, whether we’re ranking by the number of hospitals or NPR, and they even rank in the same positions. Since the #2 and #3 IDNs comprise the #1 IDN in Montana, and the #2 IDN has more hospitals and staffed beds than the third-place hospital, it is understandable how these three hospitals continuously rank in the top.

However, findings such as this show that while NPR is one way to classify an IDN’s financial strength, those looking to sell into a consolidating healthcare market should utilize other metrics, as well, to better understand the IDNs they are looking to target, such as integration level, referrals, and affiliations.

Targeting IDNs in Montana

When bringing a service or medical device to market, knowing which Montana IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help advise your healthcare commercialization strategy. In Montana, this information can even highlight which IDNs have partnered together, offering a greater network to target.

As for the value in targeting IDNs, directing your marketing efforts to these extensive and financially powerful health systems can promote greater distribution of your product or service among their affiliated hospitals, imaging centers, ambulatory surgery centers, and clinics, ultimately producing a greater impact.
