Largest IDNs in Maine

Maine is the 9th smallest state in the U.S. by population. There are 41 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Maine, according to Definitive Healthcare data, many of which are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN) or health system.

IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, physician groups, ambulatory surgery centers, or imaging centers. The larger an IDN you target, the greater the distribution you may see of your product or service, which allows your company to have a greater impact on the healthcare industry. Additionally, the greater an IDN’s revenue, the more likely they are to seek an expansion of its facilities and services.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView and data from the Medicare Cost Report, we created two lists: one ranking Maine IDNs based on their number of affiliated hospitals and another listing them in terms of financial success based on net patient revenue (NPR).

What Maine IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Maine with the highest net patient revenue is MaineHealth, with an NPR of $3.3 billion, and North Light Health has the second-highest NPR, at $1.7 billion.

The Maine IDN with the third-highest NPR is MaineGeneral Health, with an NPR of $559 million. MaineGeneral Health is a single-hospital system, meaning its NPR comes from only one facility. With it still having the third-highest NPR in Maine, there is great potential regarding the expansion it may choose to partake in. Furthermore, MaineGeneral Health offers cradle-to-grave services, bringing care to patients no matter what stage of life they are in.

Net patient revenue (NPR) is the amount of money an IDN makes for its patient services, and a greater NPR can indicate a stronger financial state. However, for those looking to target their marketing strategies, it’s important to consider more than an IDN’s NPR, with other key metrics being prescription patterns, affiliations, and relationships.

The benefits of targeting Maine IDNs

Selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and even more so when you’re looking to target IDNs since each has a unique model. Furthermore, it is this individuality that makes a targeted approach to marketing all the more important, as it allows you to personalize your sales technique and target only the IDNs that are the best fit for your company.

To narrow down your potential IDNs into a fine-tuned list of targets, understanding the broader health system landscape is essential. Whether you’re bringing your product or service to market, knowing which Maine IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you choose which ones are the best to target.
