Largest IDNs in Hawaii

Hawaii is home to 1.4 million residents. There are 32 hospitals in HI, many of which are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs, also known as health systems, are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, imaging centers, health clinics, physician groups, or ambulatory surgery centers. IDNs tend to be centrally planned and operated by a single organization or group of shareholders. By targeting IDNs with large networks, organizations doing business in the healthcare space can potentially secure sales across multiple facilities with a single deal.

Another metric of interest is net patient revenue (NPR), the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. IDNs that generate higher NPR are more likely to have the means to expand their facilities and care services.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we created two lists: one of the largest IDNs in Hawaii based on the number of affiliated hospitals and another of the most financially successful IDNs in Hawaii based on NPR.

What Hawaii IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Hawaii health system with the most hospitals is Hawaii Health Systems Corp (HHSC), with nine hospitals. Its facilities are designated as safety-net hospitals for acute and long-term care, providing services to patients regardless of insurance coverage or the ability to pay for the services they receive.

Two health systems have four hospitals each, tying them for the second-place spot: The Queen’s Health Systems, a nonprofit healthcare organization that is also the state’s largest employer, and Hawaii Pacific Health.

The largest IDNs of Hawaii are comprised of relatively few facilities compared to the top IDNs in the country, which can present a challenge for companies selling into Hawaii’s provider market. Cross-referencing IDN size with net patient revenue can make it easier to target and prioritize those organizations that offer the greatest value.

Which Hawaii IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Hawaii with the highest net patient revenue is The Queen’s Health Systems, with an NPR of $1.5 billion. Also featuring the highest number of staffed beds and the greatest volume of discharges for all Hawaii IDNs, The Queen’s Health Systems’ increased patient capacity and traffic likely contribute to its top-ranking net patient revenue.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Hawaii is Hawaii Pacific Health, with an NPR of $1.4 billion.

HHSC has the third-highest net patient revenue in Hawaii, with an NPR of $540 million. HHSC is a state-overseen system prioritizing care for all individuals, even those who cannot afford healthcare services, and thus relies on state funding to support its mission.

While NPR is a key indicator of an IDN’s financial strength, it is not the only metric that is important—other key IDN metrics to consider when targeting your marketing efforts include prescription patterns, integration level, and referrals. All of the IDNs listed above are at a system III integration level, meaning their facilities encompass the care needs of people throughout their entire lives, from cradle to grave. These details provider greater insights into the products or services that may benefit an IDN and its facilities.

The benefits of targeting Hawaii IDNs

Selling into the healthcare space is challenging, especially when you’re looking to target IDNs. Each health system has a unique model, and this individuality is what makes a targeted approach to marketing crucial—it allows you to personalize your sales technique and increase your odds of success.

In order to taper your list of potential IDNs into a fine-tuned set of targets, you must understand the broader health system landscape. Whether you’re bringing a product or service to market, knowing key metrics like NPR and facility count can help you choose which Hawaii IDNs present the most lucrative opportunities.
