Top U.S. hospitals with the most operating rooms

Operating rooms (ORs) are among hospitals’ most critical resources, as they provide the space and equipment necessary to perform surgeries and other intensive procedures.

While operating room square footage delivers a more granular metric for determining a healthcare facility’s size and overall capacity for complex procedures, a facility’s total number of ORs can indicate its ability to handle multiple operations simultaneously.

Using the Definitive Healthcare HospitalView product, we have listed the top 25 hospitals in the United States by the total number of operating rooms in each facility. The data is aggregated from the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.

Which U.S. hospitals have the most operating rooms?

The U.S. hospital with the most operating rooms is Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, with 119 operating rooms. This Ohio-based hospital is also a top U.S. hospital by net patient revenue (fifth place) and is a top teaching hospital by number of staffed beds (second place). With a higher capacity for patient care, as well as a high net patient revenue (NPR), Cleveland Clinic Main Campus sees more patients for surgical procedures, and is a top hospital by total annual surgeries.

The second top hospital by number of operating rooms is HCA Florida Northside Hospital, a 288-bed hospital that serves the St. Petersburg area, with 90 ORs. In third place is Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, with 80 ORs.

How does operating room capacity differ based on a hospital’s location?

In the U.S., hospitals’ operating room capacities may differ based on location relative to the area population. In particular, hospitals in large metropolitan areas with larger patient populations tend to have more ORs compared to hospitals in rural areas. Since most patients tend to seek surgical care in regions in which they reside, it is expected that areas with larger populations require greater facility capacity to accommodate more procedures.

For example, multiple hospitals in the list above, such as Houston Methodist Hospital and Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center in Houston, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia are in some of the largest cities in the country by population.

What are the different types of operating rooms?

The three main types of operating rooms are digital, hybrid, and integrated, and each OR type is designed to meet the differing needs of hospitals and the patient populations they serve.

Digital operating rooms are built around a central data system that integrates imaging, software, and video data systems. These ORs enable simpler sharing, transfer, and collection of medical data, which may be referenced during the operation or used afterward to assess outcomes and inform care plans.

Hybrid operating rooms bring together surgical equipment and medical imaging devices, which allows imaging to be done right in the OR. Hybrid ORs are equipped for most surgical disciplines but are generally best suited to those requiring high-resolution imaging of smaller body parts, such as cardiovascular or neurological surgery.

Integrated operating rooms contain integrated surgical systems that combine lighting, audio, video, and operating equipment in a single, centrally controlled unit. This integration improves surgical efficiency by eliminating the need to move equipment to and from the operating table during a procedure.
