Top hospitals in Philadelphia by net patient revenue

With a population that exceeds 1.5 million people, Philadelphia is the 6th-most populous city in the U.S. According to Definitive healthcare data, the City of Brotherly Love (and the birthplace of the United States) has roughly 106 hospitals and 32 integrated delivery networks (IDNs) alongside historically significant locations and artifacts, such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

Using HospitalView, we’ve collected a list of the top 20 hospitals in the Philadelphia, Camden, and Wilmington core-based statistical area (CBSA) based on net patient revenue (NPR)—the amount of money generated from patient services through commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. It is a standard method of measuring and comparing the financial performance of healthcare organizations.

What Philadelphia hospitals have the highest net patient revenue?

The Philadelphia hospital with the highest net patient revenue is the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, with an NPR of $3.3 billion. It is a part of the Penn Medicine IDN, which brings in an NPR of $7.6 billion, and is partnered with the University of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first medical school. With over 1,000 staffed beds, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is also the largest hospital in Philadephia and the surrounding area.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is ranked as the #1 hospital in both Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, according to U.S. News & World Report. They have also made the honor roll for best U.S. hospitals and nationally rank in 11 specialties, with some of the top performing being pulmonology (#5), cancer (#6), ear, nose, and throat (#9), and urology (#9).

The hospital with the second highest NPR in Philadelphia is the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), with an NPR of $2.6 billion. CHOP is the nation’s first hospital devoted entirely to pediatric care. They are also heavily involved in the community, with programs such as the Adolescent HIT Initiative, Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP), and Youth Heart Watch.

Christiana Hospital is next on the list with an NPR of $2.2 billion. They are a teaching hospital and house Delaware’s only Level I trauma center and the only Level I trauma center on the East Coast corridor between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Christiana Hospital medical campus also includes a Center for Heart and Vascular Health, the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, and the John H. Ammon Medical Education Center. Of the top 20 list compiled above, Christiana Hospital is one of only two Delaware hospitals represented.
