Largest IDNs in Vermont

Vermont is the second least populated state, with only Wyoming having a smaller population. Definitive Healthcare data tracks 17 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Vermont, with some of them being part of the state’s two integrated delivery networks (IDN).

IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, physician groups, imaging centers, health clinics, or surgery centers. They may also be referred to as health systems. Generally speaking, the more extensive an IDN’s network, the more opportunities there are for healthcare organizations selling into the provider market.

With help from HospitalView, we ranked both of Vermont’s IDNs based on their number of affiliated hospitals and net patient revenue (NPR).

What Vermont IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Vermont health system with the most hospitals is The University of Vermont Health Network, with six hospitals. It combines the best of academic and community medicine, sharing knowledge to bring leading-edge technology and advanced treatment options to its patients.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is North Star Health, with only one hospital. It offers multiple locations and service types, including school-based services, walk-in care, telehealth visits, and (soon) a mobile unit. North Star Health’s commitment to the communities it serves is also evident in the support offered, including financial assistance based on income and family size and help with transportation.

While Vermont IDNs do not comprise as many hospitals as some of the top IDNs in the country, it is still useful to know which IDNs have the most expansive networks—the more hospitals in an IDN’s network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized. In a state with fewer hospitals, understanding these connections is crucial for healthcare commercialization efforts.

What Vermont IDN has the highest net patient revenue?

The IDN in Vermont with the highest net patient revenue is The University of Vermont Health Network, with an NPR of $2.6 billion. Its relatively larger network of hospitals—featuring six facilities compared to North Star Health’s one—offers the space for more staffed beds, which increases the number of patients it is able to see. As a result, The University of Vermont Health Network sees over 34,000 discharges in a year, whereas North Star Health has fewer than 600. This significant difference in discharges is also reflected in the NPR discrepancy.

In second place for this ranking is North Star Health, which has an NPR of $51 million.

How can NPR guide IDN targeting in Vermont?

NPR is the total amount of money brought in from patient services, and it can be collected through Medicaid, Medicare, or insurance. It is commonly used to measure an IDN’s financial strength because it shows how much cash a facility has coming in. From a marketing standpoint, NPR can be used to identify the IDNs that are financially capable of expanding their services or updating their technology.

However, even though NPR is commonly used to gauge an IDN’s financial strength, prescription patterns, affiliations, and integration levels can also provide insights into an IDN’s operations. In today’s consolidating healthcare market, understanding how IDNs operate and relate to facilities and other networks is crucial for creating more effective relationships and converting leads into clients.
