Largest IDNs in Rhode Island
When ranking the states by their populations, Rhode Island falls 7th from the bottom. Its over one million residents rely on 17 healthcare facilities and hospitals in RI, and many of them are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN).
Also known as a health system, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that aim to provide a coordinated and comprehensive range of healthcare services to patients. While hospitals are just one possible facility in an IDN’s network, they are often the largest and highest-earning. As such, targeting IDNs with vast hospital networks allows for your product or service to reach more facilities and help more patients.
Another metric of an IDN’s success is its net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. Generally, larger NPRs tend to indicate greater financial success, and these IDNs may be more likely to expand their facilities and healthcare offerings.
With help from HospitalView and using data from the Medicare Cost Report, we created two lists: one ranking Rhode Island IDNs by their number of affiliated hospitals and another by their NPR.

What Rhode Island IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?
The Rhode Island health system with the most hospitals is Lifespan (rebranding to Brown University Health), with five hospitals. This not-for-profit health system comprises three teaching hospitals, which are among the country’s top recipients of research funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Its network also includes the nation’s first psychiatric hospital for children.
The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is not-for-profit Care New England, with three hospitals. It is classified as a system III integration level because it offers cradle-to-grave services, as is reflected in their service specialties—primary care, cardiovascular care, surgery, psychiatry, oncology, newborn pediatrics, women’s health services, and behavioral health. Many of its hospitals are teaching affiliates of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Finally, the other two IDNs in Rhode Island—Prospect CharterCARE Health Partners and Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals Health System—have the same number of hospitals: two.
Given the small population size of Rhode Island, it is unsurprising that the IDNs of Rhode Island do not have as many hospitals in their networks as some of the top IDNs in the country. However, there is still value in knowing which RI IDNs have the most expansive networks because the more hospitals in an IDN’s network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized. In a state with fewer hospitals, such as Rhode Island, having these connections is crucial for your healthcare commercialization.

What Rhode Island IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?
The IDN in Rhode Island with the highest net patient revenue is Lifespan (rebranding to Brown University Health), with an NPR of $2.1 billion. Lifespan holding the highest NPR is expected since its network has more staffed beds than any other IDN in Rhode Island, meaning it can see more patients and, as a result, bring in more revenue from patient services.
The IDN with the second highest NPR in Rhode Island is Care New England, with an NPR of $923 million.
Prospect CharterCARE Health Partners has the third-highest NPR in Rhode Island, with an NPR of $303 million. In addition to its hospitals, it also brings in revenue through its regional cancer center, rehabilitation center, and home health services.
