Largest IDNs in New Mexico

New Mexico is the 36th largest state in the U.S. when ranking by population. Definitive Healthcare tracks 67 hospitals and healthcare facilities in NM, with many of these facilities being part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN), or health system.

Health systems are networks of hospitals, surgery centers, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. With so many distinct facilities, the IDNs of New Mexico present valuable business opportunities for organizations selling into the market. A successful healthcare commercialization strategy should therefore include thorough analysis of these IDNs.

Certain metrics can help you identify networks of particular interest. For example, the more affiliated facilities an IDN has, the greater the opportunity for the distribution of a product or service. Net patient revenue (NPR) can be used to determine which IDNs have cash reserves and may be looking to expand or upgrade their facilities or services.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we ranked the IDNs in New Mexico based on these two metrics to determine which IDNs were the largest and highest-earning.

What New Mexico IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The New Mexico health system with the most hospitals is Presbyterian Healthcare Services, with nine hospitals. It is a locally owned and operated healthcare system that has grown from a small tuberculosis sanatorium established in the early 20th century to New Mexico’s largest health system. Their network is so extensive that it serves one in three New Mexicans with coverage or healthcare.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is Lovelace Health System, with six hospitals. Among these hospitals is New Mexico’s only hospital dedicated to women’s health and the only hospital in New Mexico that provides only cardiovascular care.

UNM Health System has the third-highest number of hospitals, with five affiliated hospitals. It is New Mexico’s only academic medical center and the only Level 1 Trauma center in the state.

New Mexico health systems may not have as many hospitals in their network as some of the top IDNs in the country, but there is still value in knowing which NM IDNs have the most expansive networks—the more hospitals in their network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized. Knowing this, larger IDNs can be a wise target for your marketing efforts.

What New Mexico IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in New Mexico with the highest net patient revenue is Presbyterian Healthcare Services, with an NPR of $1.7 billion. Its regional hospitals offer acute and preventive care, including prevention and screening programs.

The IDN with the second-highest NPR in New Mexico is UNM Health System, with an NPR of $1.4 billion, and the IDN with the third-highest NPR is the Lovelace Health System, with an NPR of $720 million.

All three of these IDNs also made the list of the largest IDNs in New Mexico—the only difference being that the no. 2 and no. 3 health systems swapped positions. In general, larger IDNs are expected to generate more revenue because they typically have more staffed beds and a higher patient capacity. However, these metrics are not always perfectly correlated, and a variety of other factors can contribute to a facility’s or network’s overall performance and financial health.

Targeting IDNs in New Mexico

In today’s healthcare market, hospitals are no longer the core of the patient care model; in fact, IDNs are responsible for overseeing many aspects of patient care, making them a valuable target for those looking to make an impact in the healthcare market.

However, selling into the healthcare space is complicated, especially when you’re looking to target complex organizations like IDNs. Each IDN follows a unique model, so a cookie-cutter marketing approach will not be as effective as a tailored approach. Understanding New Mexico’s broader health system landscape can help you in this endeavor.
