Largest IDNs in Mississippi

Mississippi is the 35th largest state in the U.S. by population. There are more than 120 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Mississippi, according to Definitive Healthcare data. Many of these facilities are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN), or health system.

Your healthcare commercialization strategy can see a significant boost when you better understand the characteristics of the IDNs in Mississippi. Specifically, two key features of an IDN include its size (based on the number of affiliated hospitals) and financial strength (based on its net patient revenue). Targeting large health systems allows for greater distribution of a product or service, and IDNs with high NPRs are more likely to have the means to upgrade or expand their services.

With the help of Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView product, we’ve compiled a list of the largest and highest-earning IDNs in Mississippi based on data from the Medicare Cost Report.

What Mississippi IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Mississippi health system with the most hospitals is VA South Central VA Health Care Network, with nine hospitals. This health system is a part of the larger parent IDN, the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is one of the largest IDNs in the U.S. based on the number of hospitals within its network.

Two IDNs are tied for the second-place spot with eight hospitals each. The first is North Mississippi Health Services. They are committed to patient- and family-centered care, which is reflected in their offerings of diagnostic, acute, emergency, and therapeutic services. They also have the sole trauma center in their service area.

Second, there’s Forrest Health, which increases access to quality health care for those in South Mississippi. What started as a 90-bed facility has since grown to encompass eight hospitals, a level II regional trauma center, and centers for orthopedics, hospice, women’s surgery, and addiction services.

What Mississippi IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Mississippi with the highest net patient revenue is the University of Mississippi Healthcare, with an NPR of $1.1 billion. It also contains the state’s only academic medical center.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Mississippi is North Mississippi Health Services, with an NPR of $968 million.

Memorial Health System has the third-highest NPR in Mississippi, with an NPR of $708 million. Impressively, this IDN holds this third-place spot despite having only two affiliated hospitals and just over a third of the number of staffed beds of the second-place IDN. This data suggests that Memorial Health System earns more per patient, whether because they perform more financially advantageous procedures or because their patients require longer-term care.

While NPR is a key indicator of an IDN’s financial strength, there are other metrics to consider when you’re looking to understand IDNs, such as integration level. For example, two of these IDNs are classified as a System III integration level. This integration level, also known as vertical integration, means that the IDNs provide cradle-to-grave healthcare services. By offering a wide range of services, these IDNs can see more patients, which can contribute to their higher NPRs.

The second-place IDN, however, is classified as a System IV integration level, which means it implements an exceptional amount of organization and strategy in its internal structure. As such, it aligns its information systems, purchasing, distribution, and centralized administrative control across all its facilities.

Knowing the integration level of an IDN provides insights into what services they may prioritize and can influence your list of targets.

The value in targeting Mississippi IDNs

When you’re looking to sell into Mississippi’s healthcare industry, having a strategy is essential to ensure that every effort you make sees profitable returns. In today’s consolidating healthcare market, where networks are increasingly responsible for decision-making at their member facilities, it is more important than ever to focus your marketing efforts on IDNs.

Whether you’re bringing a product or service to market, knowing which Mississippi IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you narrow down a target list based on financial success, network breadth, and location. In the world of targeted marketing, knowledge truly is power, and you can save time and money by focusing your efforts on the right IDNs.
