Largest IDNs in Delaware

Delaware is the 6th smallest state in the U.S. by population. As such, there are roughly 19 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Delaware, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, physician groups, ambulatory surgery centers, or imaging centers. The larger an IDN you target, the greater the distribution you may see of your product or service, which allows your company to have a greater impact on the healthcare industry.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we created two lists: one of the largest IDNs in Colorado based on their number of affiliated hospitals and another of the most financially successful IDNs in Colorado based on NPR.

What Delaware IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Delaware health system with the most hospitals is non-profit ChristianaCare, with three hospitals. Headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, ChristianaCare serves Delaware and the surrounding areas of Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. It operates a major teaching hospital, flagship Christiana Hospital (the region's only university-level tertiary academic medical center), and maintains Delaware's only Level I trauma center.

As for the number two spot, that is held by two IDNs, Bayhealth and Beebe Healthcare, which both have two hospitals in their network.

Bayhealth has a Kent and Sussex campus alongside a freestanding emergency department in Smyrna.. This not-for-profit healthcare system is an affiliate of Penn Medicine for cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics, and neurosciences.

Beebe Healthcare offers specialized service lines in oncology, surgical services, cardiac and vascular, orthopedic services, and women’s health.

While Delaware IDNs do not have as many hospitals in their network as some of the top IDNs in the country, knowing which IDNs have the most expansive networks can indicate who is a wise target—the more hospitals in their network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized.

What Delaware IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Delaware with the highest net patient revenue is ChristianaCare, with an NPR of $2.4 billion. The IDN with the second-highest NPR in Delaware is Bayhealth, with an NPR of $887 million. Beebe Healthcare has the third-highest NPR in Delaware, with an NPR of $549 million.

All three of these hospitals hold the same rankings, whether ranked by affiliated hospitals or NPR. Since more hospitals allow for more beds—and more beds might lead to more patients—it's understandable how the IDNs with the largest networks also have the most staffed beds and highest NPRs for Delaware.

Targeting IDNs in Delaware

In today’s healthcare market, hospitals are no longer the primary focus of care providers and patients; instead, IDNs increasingly oversee many aspects of patient care, making them a valuable target for suppliers. Furthermore, marketing to IDNs allows you to take advantage of their wide range of care facilities, especially if you market to IDNs with larger networks.

However, selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and even more so when you're looking to target IDNs. Each IDN follows a unique model, so a cookie-cutter marketing approach will not be as successful as tailoring your marketing to match the IDN. Understanding Delaware’s broader health system landscape can help you in this endeavor.

Beyond each IDN’s number of affiliated hospitals and NPR, other key metrics that can prove useful for your marketing strategy include prescription patterns, integration levels, and referrals.
